Having an aggressive anti-virus and Internet Security application; and keeping them up to date; is likely the single most important thing that you can do to protect your system and your personal information.
For many years, in fact for as long as I have had computers, I have favored a particular brand of product (comes in a mostly yellow box, rhymes with "Horton"); but over the last year I have migrated away from that product and started using AVG.
AVG is a very aggressive product and very easy to configure and use; and did I mention that it is FREE???!!!
I first used it for temporary protection on a new machine, but quickly came to really like the product; so much so that I have purchased the full-featured version.
