System Recovery: System Restore

Should you experience a serious event (virus, spyware, system failure, etc); relax... all is not lost; in fact; things really aren't all that bad provided you've been taking some prudent measures from time to time.

We've already discussed restoring your system from a system backup; but there is another tool available to us that can be employed if we have a problem other than a hard disk failure. Let's say that you install some new application; say a photo editing software; and for some reason your computer becomes unstable and stops working properly.

One of your options is to utilize the System Restore feature.

System Restore essentially takes a "snapshot" of your system and your settings at a given point in time; and allows you to "roll back" your system to that earlier point in time; to a time at which everything was working properly.

System Restore will not cause you to lose recently created documents; but it will undo major system changes that took place after the restore date.

Windows automatically creates a System Restore point each day, and you can create one manually as well. I suggest that you manually create a Restore point prior to making significant changes to your system such as installing new applications.

System Restore is allocated a finite amount of memory. It is occasionally a good idea to create a restore point and then turn off System Restore; this will delete all of the restore points except for the most recent one; and it will free your system resources.

To create a restore point:
Go to "Start" - "Accessories" - "System Tools" - "System Restore".
Select "Create A Restore Point" and click "Next".
Follow the subsequent instructions.

To restore your system to an earlier time:
Go to "Start" - "Accessories" - "System Tools" - "System Restore".
Select "Restore My Computer To An Earlier Time".
Click "Next" and follow the instructions.

To turn off System Restore:
Open "Control Panel" and double click the "System" icon.
Select the "System Restore" tab and click "Turn Off System Restore".
Click "Apply" and confirm that you wish to disable System Restore.
