Microsoft Windows: Safe Mode

"Safe Mode" is a special "diagnostic" feature of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Safe Mode is a crucial tool in the fight to clean or repair a system once it has been infected with malware. If you are running Windows NT or earlier; Safe Mode is not available to you and you might want to think about upgrading your OS.

Many types of malware will infect system files that are memory resident; meaning that even if they are detected by anti-malware applications; they are not likely to be fully removed. Additionally, many of these malicious programs come with "re-installers"; so that if they are removed they will simply be re-installed during the next reboot of the system.

Launching your system into Safe Mode causes a selective start up wherein only certain files necessary to the basic operation of the system are loaded into memory; leaving possibly infected files "dormant"; and more readily available for repair.

Be aware that not all applications, and not every function of every application will operate in Safe Mode. Ideally, you would boot your system into Safe Mode; run updates to your anti-malware applications; and then perform scans and system maintenance to repair your machine.

To boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your system.
During the reboot, repeatedly press the "F8" key.
You will be prompted with start up options; choose "Safe Mode with networking".
Upon rebooting, update your applications and run scans.
Restart normally when finished.

Or:
Using your mouse; select "Start", and then "Run".
Type "msconfig" in the run dialog box.
From the "General" tab choose "Diagnostic Start Up".
Click "Apply".
Restart your system, update your applications and run scans.
Restart normally when finished.
