Spyware, viruses, etc...

There are thousands of different types of spyware, viruses and other nasty "bugs" out there; with more appearing every day; just looking for a chance to infect your system.

We will refer to these collectively and generically as "malware".

Malware is created for many different reasons; some are intended to steal passwords, credit card or banking information, or any other kind of private, personal information; some are used to "hijack" your system and employ it in some nefarious activity; while others might go unnoticed until some event "triggers" the malware and results in some type of action.

Regardless of the intended purpose of any given instance of malware; the results are never good and they can be highly dangerous and catastrophic.

A newer type of malware being seen ever more often has been dubbed "Rougeware". Typically, rougeware simulates an anti-virus or anti-malware application, performs a fake scan of the infected system, and reports non-existent problems. The victim is then prompted to purchase a paid version of the fake software in order to "remove" the infections. If the victim takes the bait; her or his banking or credit card information is compromised and delivered to the author of the malware.

The people who perpetrate these attacks deserve a serious beating and a long prison sentence. I read a few weeks ago that it was estimated that billions of dollars have been collected by these cretins just in the last few months.

Fortunately, it really isn't too difficult to protect ourselves from these attacks; though it can sometimes be problematic to recover, once infected.

Any computer that is connected to a network, to the internet, or which might share or copy files from another system, needs to be protected by anti-malware applications and some type of internet security program. On the pages that follow, we provide links to some excellent FREE products that will help to protect your system from attacks; and help to repair your system if it should become infected.
Although these products are free, each vendor also offers a paid version of each product that offers greater functionality than the free version. I encouarge you to "test drive" the free version; and to consider purchasing the paid version if you like the product.
